Dental Extractions

Dental extractions are exactly what they sound like they are, pulling teeth. That doesn't sound very nice but thanks to modern medicine, advancements in the dental field, and the careful nature of our dentists, you can be sure that dental extractions have become quick and relatively painless procedures that can spare you from further pain, infection, and problems down the road.

When do you need a dental extraction?

Dental extractions become necessary for a variety of reasons. Most common among them would be severe tooth decay, infection, gum disease, a tooth blocking other teeth from coming in, fractured teeth, and the growth of impacted wisdom teeth. Most of these problems have to do with a tooth becoming too destroyed to be recovered or a tooth that becomes a threat to other teeth and areas of the mouth.

What occurs during a dental extraction?

There are two types of extractions.

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction typically requires just some local anesthetic and a few simple tools that will help one of our experienced dentist to easily and gently remove the problematic tooth. It's a short, simple, and relatively painless procedure. Most patients spend no more than an hour in our office when they come in for this procedure.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is a little more complex but still considered a relatively simple and painless procedure. A surgical extraction has to be performed when a tooth is not easy to access using conventional methods. For example, this can happen when a tooth does not erupt fully (it doesn't fully come out of the gums) or the tooth is fractured below the gum line and the part below the gum won't come out with the rest of the tooth. So, while you're under general anesthesia, the doctor will make an incision in the gum and remove the part of the tooth that isn't reachable.
